Pause for Thought - September 2025

Then justice will dwell in the wilderness,
and righteousness abide in the fruitful field.
The effect of righteousness will be peace,
and the result of righteousness, quietness and trust for ever. My people will abide in a peaceful habitation,
in secure dwellings, and in quiet resting-places. (Isaiah 32: 16-18)
In the church calendar September is designated as the Season of Creation, and the theme for this year is ‘Peace with Creation’. Through our Sunday services we are looking at what it means to be good stewards of creation, of the resources we have been entrusted with, of our church buildings and grounds.
As Eco-Congregations, we have already committed to spiritually, practically and globally living with care of creation in mind, but what does that look like?
Spiritually, it is to acknowledge God as creator, to give Him thanks for this beautiful world, and to praise him as we praise God the creator, saying sorry for the harm done to the environment, giving thanks to God for the gift of creation and praying for the healing of the earth.
Practically, it is an ongoing commitment to ensure that we are not being wasteful in the way we use our resources, checking that all our light bulbs are energy saving, that our taps are not dripping, that we are considering how we heat our buildings, that we are using recycled or Fairtrade products where possible. You will of course all be having these same conversations at home and one of the things that we can do, individually as well as collectively, is to measure our carbon footprint and find out how lightly we can tread. Carbon Calculator - ClimateHero seems to be a good website to use to measure your carbon footprint, and the test only takes about 5 minutes of your time.
Globally, both church communities support Christian Aid who work on the frontline and advocate for places affected by climate change. In that way we are taking a global viewpoint, offsetting our own riches, by supporting those who are far more in need than us.
So you can see we are already on that journey of living spiritually, practically and globally with the care of creation in mind. Our care of the created world is an imperative that we have been entrusted with, and that we can partner with the wider world in doing better. Achieving Eco Congregation status has set us on our journey in the right direction, let’s commit to continuing to seek ways of treading lightly on God’s glorious planet in this season of creation and beyond.
